Description =========== The Compaq RoamAbout network adapter is a device that provides connectivity between stations in a wireless LAN. A station is any portable computer (such as a mobile PC, laptop, notebook computer, notepad or hand-held scanner), a PDA that is equipped with a PCMCIA Type II card slot. Additionally, the PC Card network adapter is used with the Compaq RoamAbout Access Point, which is a device that provides bridging functions to connect a wireless LAN to a wired LAN. Features ======== Provides wired LAN-like throughput with coverage up to 800 feet -- allows for untethered networking Uses wireless spread spectrum radio technology in the 915-MHz Supports the two major types of spread spectrum wireless technology known as direct sequence and frequency hopping Enables peer-to-peer communications between desktop PCs in a wireless LAN -- no wired infrastructure needed Includes point-to-point diagnostics and node diagnostics -- allows for verification of communication paths and optimal device positioning Requires no external power supplies Supports in-building roaming -- continuously access the wired network No FCC license required 2 Mb/s LAN throughput Compliance with European (ETS), USA (FCC), Canadian (ISC), and Japanese (MPT) requirements Hot swap capable Direct-sequence, spread-spectrum RF technology Large in-building coverage area in a semi-open office environment averaging 11k square meters (125k square feet) for a 915 MHz network adapter Reliable Bit Error Rate transmission of 10 -8 or better Typical RF output power 15 dBm Station mobility at pedestrian speed Seamless roaming between coverage areas (cells) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
