Description
===========
The DEC FDDIcontroller/TURBOchannel controller provides TURBOchannel-based
computers with a direct link between the computer's TURBOchannel slot and a
Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) network. Depending on the model and
the topology that you have, the controller can serve as either a single
attachment station (SAS) or a dual attachment station (DAS) and can connect
to the FDDI network using fiber-optic or Category 5 UTP copper cable.
Features

Uses standards-compliant (ANSI X3T9.5) FDDI technology, ensuring
interoperability within multivendor networks
Full-duplex FFDT operations when connected point-to-point with
any other FFDT-capable device
Uses Direct Memory Access transfers on both transmit and receive
to minimize CPU overhead and maximize aggregate throughput
Three models -- MMF SAS, MMF DAS, and UTP SAS models
Includes on-board station management (SMT) V7.2 for continued
multivendor interoperability -- uses FLASH memory technology to enable
downline code upgrades of SMT firmware and other features through the
host CPU
Occupies only one TURBOchannel slot
All three options will autoconfigure to operate in FFDT mode
when connected point-to-point with another FFDT-compliant adapter or
device
The DAS option can be connected "dual-homed" to a pair of wiring
concentrators, directly to a dual-ring, or a GIGAswitch/FDDI
The DEFTA-AA will supersede the DEFTA-FA in all applications
once full operating systems support becomes available
Supports sustained full bandwidth FDDI communications,
approximately 100 Mb/s (On the VAXstation 4000 Model 90, this is bounded
to approximately 33 Mb/s.
Provides the highest aggregate throughput, in excess of 100
Mb/s, when operated in FFDT mode (up to a maximum of 200 Mb/s depending
on the host CPU and protocol and application).

multimode optics and ST-type connectors
DEFTA-UA One-card, single attachment station (SAS) controller with shielded
RJ-45 modular connector. Accepts Category 5 unshielded
twisted-pair (UTP) or Category 5 sheath-shielded, 100-ohm
twisted-pair (TP) cable with TP-MIC plug
DEFTA-DA One-card, dual attachment station (DAS) controller with multimode
optics and ST-type connectors
