Installing the SDCM Server Hardware
Kit in a Rack
Complete the following steps to install the SDCM Server Hardware Kit into a Compaq
9000 Series, or comparable rack.
NOTE: The SDCM Hardware Kit installs in most racks, using the supplied adjustable rail
extensions. For example, the kit accommodates both the Compaq 9000 Series and
Compaq M- Series racks.
1. Select an appropriate location to install the kit in the rack. The SDCM Server
Hardware Kit requires approximately 2.25 in. or 1.3U of space in the rack. Install the
kit one hole higher than the standard 1U location.
NOTE: If installing three or more switches, Compaq recommends installing the SDCM Server
and shelf in the middle of the rack.
2. Insert the eight cage nuts provided as follows. Four cage nuts install at the front of the
rack, four cage nuts install at the rear of the rack.
a. On the front of the rack, locate the appropriate screw holes, based on the rack
position determined in step 1.
b. Insert a cage nut in the topmost screw hole, one hole above the start of one rack
Unit.
c. Repeat steps 2a and 2b for each of three cage nuts.
d. On the rear of the rack, insert the four cage nuts that correspond with the cage nuts
you installed in the front of the rack.

technicians. Position one technician at the front of the rack, and one technician at the rear of the
rack.
a. To avoid tipping the shelf kit, hold the the kit firmly, placing one hand at the front
of the tray and one hand at the rear of the tray.

NOTE: For example, the Compaq 9000 Series rack requires a longer rail extension. The Compaq
M-Series rack requires a shorter rail extension.
d. Loosely secure the rail extension to the inner segment of the shelf rails.
e. Repeat steps 5a through 5d for the corresponding rail extension.
NOTE: Before tightening the screws for each rail extension, it is important to secure the shelf
rails to the front and rear of the rack with the four screws provided. When the shelf is secure,
continue with step f.
