Release Notes 5 Supported Configurations Operation of multiple Directors in a fabric topology is subject to the following topology limits. Consider the impact of these limits when planning the fabric. s Fabric Elements--Each fabric element is defined by a unique domain ID that ranges between 1 and 31; therefore, the theoretical limit of interconnected Directors in a single fabric is 31. The supported limit of interconnected Directors in a single fabric is 4. Because this number is subject to change, contact your Compaq representative for the current number of interconnected Directors supported in a single fabric. s Inhomogeneous fabric--To determine if interoperability is supported for a product, or if restrictions apply, refer to the product publications, or contact your Compaq representative. s Number of Interswitch Links (ISLs)--Theoretically, the ISL limit per Director is 64. The maximum supported number of ISLs per Director is 32 (half of the Director ports). For redundancy, at least two ISLs should connect any two Director-class fabric elements. Because this number is subject to change, contact your Compaq representative for the current number of ISLs supported per Director. s Hop Count--The fibre channel theoretical limit of ISL connections traversed (hop count) in a single path through a fabric is 7. The maximum supported hop count in a single path through a fabric is 3. Because this number is subject to change, contact your Compaq representative for the current hop count supported by a single fabric path. NOTE: The hop count is equal to the number of ISL connections traversed in a single path, not the total number of ISL connections between devices. Cable Requirements IMPORTANT: Please note that optical cables for the the Director must be ordered separately. For cables measuring 500 meters or less, use multi-mode Fibre Channel cables. For cables longer than 500 meters, use single-mode Fibre Channel cables. Multi-mode optical cables are connected to short-wave optical transceiver modules in a Director. Single-mode optical cables are connected to long-wave optical transceiver modules in a Director. Multi-mode cables should use 50/125 optical fibers, and single-mode cables typically use 9/125 optical fibers for distances up to 10 km. 6 SAN Director 64 Verify that connectors interfacing with the Director uses LC Duplex connectors with a PC finish. Additionally, the connector at the opposite end of the cable must use either LC or SC type, depending on the requirements of the connected device. Known Issues This section describes the known issues related to the StorageWorks SAN Director 64. Zone Set Activation Under certain conditions, when adding a server with two host bus adapters (HBA) to the active zone, it may be required to invoke the activation of the zone set twice by clicking the Activate button twice. This condition can occur in a configuration with storage using HSG80 dual controllers, with SecurePath software installed on a server with two HBAs, and with the storage and server configured for "multi-bus" mode of operation. When this server with two HBAs is added to the active zone set with a single click using the Activate button, two new connections are established with the HSG80 for each HBA, for a total of four new connections. This is observed at the HSG80. However, in this "multi-bus" mode configuration, each HBA should establish four connections, for a total of eight connections to the server. This can be achieved with a second click to the Activate button when adding the server to the active zone set. Director and SDCM Server Ethernet Connections Management of the StorageWorks SAN Director 64 requires the SANWorks Director Connectivity Manager (SDCM) application running on an SDCM Server. Management is performed out-of-band over and Ethernet connection between the SDCM Server and one Release Notes 7 or more Directors. When Directors are directly connected to some enterprise networks with abnormally high traffic, the active SAN Director's Ethernet interface may become overloaded and stop responding to management requests. In most cases, only management and monitoring of the Director are affected. However, the potential exists for fibre channel fabric operation to also be affected. In order to fully prevent the chance of this occurring, Compaq requires the SDCM Server and attached Directors' Ethernet network connections to be configured as described in this Release Note. This interim requirement will be removed in the near future. Compaq customers should check the Compaq web site for the latest firmware version and accompanying Release Notes at the following URL. http://www.compaq.com/products/storageworks/director The following sections describe the installation changes required to properly configure the SDCM server and SAN Director 64. These Release Notes supersede the information described in the accompanying manuals. Note that when this problem is remedied in the near future, the installation configurations as described in the manuals will be fully supported. Overview of SDCM Server and SAN Director 64 Network Interfaces The SDCM Server provides two auto-detecting 10/100 Mbps Network Interface Card connections. The NIC at the rear of the server has a RJ-45 connector and must be used to attach the customer-supplied LAN segment containing only SAN Directors to the SDCM Server. This isolates the StorageWorks SAN Director 64(s) from potential issues that may exist on the enterprise LAN. A second network connection is provided using a Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) NIC located on the right side of the SDCM Server. The PCMCIA network connection attaches to the customer's enterprise LAN. This connection is not required to manage and operate the StorageWorks SAN Director 64, but is necessary to enable the use of other features. Specifically, this LAN connection allows the use of the call-home function, e-mail notification of events, and the remote client applications management of SAN Director 64(s) from a workstation other than the SDCM Server. Further, this enterprise LAN connection allows the SDCM Server to be accessed from a SANworks Management 8 SAN Director 64 Appliance. If the Network View application is installed and running on the SANworks Management Appliance it can communicate with the SDCM Server and launch SDCM, SD-64 Product Manager, and the Fabric Manager application remotely. Installation Procedure for Ethernet Connections to the SDCM Server and the SAN Director 64 An exclusive, private LAN must connect all StorageWorks SAN Director 64(s) to the SDCM Server. The SDCM Server has a second network interface that is used to connect the SDCM Server to the customer's enterprise LAN. See Figure 1. 1 [1] Select this graphic frame. [2] Select File. See Figure 1. 2. Connect the remaining end of each Ethernet cable to the private LAN to which the SDCM Server private LAN Ethernet connector at the rear of the laptop is connected. Additional Operational Changes Required Due to Use Of Private LAN At this time, Compaq only supports a configuration that uses the private LAN Ethernet connector of the SDCM Server to connect to the Ethernet connectors of the StorageWorks SAN Director 64(s) onto a private LAN, and no other devices are allowed to be connected to this private LAN. The SDCM Server public LAN connector is available to connect to a customer enterprise LAN. This connection is not required to manage and operate the StorageWorks SAN Director 64, but does enable the use of other features, including the usage of the call-home function, e-mail notification of events, and the remote client applications for management of StorageWorks SAN Director 64(s) from a workstation. Configure and Enable the Call-Home Feature The SDCM Server call-home feature provides automatic event notification to a support center for reporting Director problems. In order to report events, this feature requires the SDCM Server public LAN connector to have a valid LAN connection to a SANworks Management Appliance or other server running the Compaq Proactive Services software. This service is offered at no additional charge for subsystems covered under an on-site warranty or on-site storage hardware support contract. To register or order Proactive Service software, contact your Compaq customer service representative. 16 SAN Director 64 Remote User Workstations Remote workstations, which are desired to use remote client applications for management of StorageWorks SAN Director 64(s), must have access to the customer enterprise LAN on which the SDCM Server public LAN connection is installed. Embedded Web Server (EWS) Interface Management of a SAN Director 64 using the Embedded Web Server (EWS) interface requires the use of a workstation connected to the same LAN as the SAN Director 64. Because no devices except the SDCM Server and SAN Director 64(s) are permitted to be on this private LAN, this feature is currently not supported. SNMP Management Workstations A Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agent runs on each SAN Director 64. Using SNMP requires a workstation which is LAN connected to the SAN Director 64. Because no devices except the SDCM Server and SAN Director 64(s) are permitted to be on the private LAN, this feature is not supported at this time. Launching EWS from Network View Management of a SAN Director 64 by launching the EWS interface from Network View would require a SAN Appliance that is connected to the same LAN as the SAN Director 64. Because no devices except the SDCM Server and SAN Director 64(s) are permitted to be on the private LAN, this feature is not supported at this time.
