Backing Up and Restoring Data
The backup and restore of critical SANworks DC Manager data on the Windows NT
system is provided by the Iomega QuikSync application, which is installed on the SDCM
server when you install the Iomega Zip drive.
Backup
During installation, QuikSync is automatically configured to mirror the contents of the
SdcmData directory to the attached Zip drive any time the contents of that directory
change or the server is restarted. Therefore, whenever you make a configuration change,
add or remove a managed product, or make any other changes through the SANworks DC
Manager or Fabric Manager, the data in this directory is automatically backed up. The
existing backup file is updated; no separate versions of the backup file are maintained.
NOTE: To ensure trouble-free backups, it is imperative that you leave the Zip drive connected to
the SDCM server and leave a Zip disk in that drive.
When you log into Windows NT on the SDCM server, QuikSync starts automatically. Any
data that has changed in the SdcmData directory while you were logged out will
automatically be backed up.
The backed up data includes:
s All SANworks DC Manager configuration (product definitions, user names, encrypted
passwords, user rights, nicknames, session options, SNMP configuration, e-mail
addresses, etc.).
s Logs, both for the SANworks DC Manager and any Product Managers.
s Zoning library, including all zone sets and zone definitions.
s Firmware library.
s Call-home configuration information.
114 SANworks Director Connectivity Manager User Guide
Since the configuration data for each individual product is stored in NVRAM on the
product itself, there is a separate backup option provided in each Product Manager to save
the product configuration to the SDCM server. If you perform a product configuration
backup through the Product Manager, the configuration data is stored in the SdcmData
directory and automatically mirrored to the QuikSync Zip disk.
The QuikSync application will not back up certain Windows NT configurations that need
to be reconfigured on a newly-restored SDCM server, including:
s Windows NT user names and passwords.
s TCP/IP network configuration (IP address, Gateway address, DNS names, etc.)
You should use other means to back up this type of information.
The QuikSync application is included on the SDCM Management Applications CD, and
automatically installed on the SDCM server during installation. A Zip disk dedicated to
QuikSync is needed for each SDCM server and is included with the SDCM installation
package.
Restore
In the event of a system failure, you will be able to return your database to a known state.
To restore data from the backup disk to the SDCM server:
1. Click the Windows Start button, then click Programs, then Windows NT Explorer.
The Exploring window displays.
2. Copy the SdcmData directory from the Zip disk to the SDCM root directory (typically
c:\SdcmData).
3. Close the Exploring window.
4. Restart the SDCM server:
