Installing Non-Hot-Plug Options If you are installing non-hot-plug options before completing the device setup and installation process, it is not necessary to back up stored data or to shut down the device. However, any time that you power down the device completely, it is important to back up all data stored on the device. At all times, be aware of potential electrical hazards to work as safely as possible. Installing non-hot-plug components requires only the Torx T-15 screwdriver included with your device and screws or mounting strips provided in each option kit. For information about obtaining Compaq option kits for upgrading your NAS E7000, contact a Compaq authorized reseller. WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to the equipment: Disconnect power from the device by unplugging all power cords from either the electrical outlet or the device. Do not disable the power cord grounding plug. The grounding plug is an important safety feature. Plug the power cord into a grounded (earthed) electrical outlet that is easily accessible at all times. WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the internal system components to cool before touching surface areas. CAUTION: Electrostatic discharge can damage electronic components. Make sure you are properly grounded before beginning any installation procedure. Compaq StorageWorks NAS Executor E7000 Hardware Reference Guide 2-5 COMPAQ CONFIDENTIAL Writer: Darrell Washington File Name: c-ch2 Hardware Options.doc Codename: Eusebio Part Number: 260615-001 Last Saved On: 10/19/01 3:02 PM Hardware Options Preparing to Install Non-Hot-Plug Options Before installing a non-hot-plug hardware option: 1. Back up data. NOTE: In a new NAS E7000, it is only necessary to back up data after installation and configuration is complete. 2. Shut down the operating system as directed in the operating system instructions. 3. If the device is on, move the power switch to the Standby position. 4. Verify that the first system LED on the front panel, located nearest the Power On/Standby switch, turns amber and that all fans stop spinning. WARNING: Before removing the top access panel, be sure that the power switch is set in the Standby position and that the power cord is disconnected from the electrical outlet. IMPORTANT: The system power in the NAS E7000 does not shut off completely from the front panel Power On/Standby switch. The two positions of the switch function as On and Standby, rather than On and Off. The Standby position removes power from most of the electronics and the drives; however, portions of the power supply and some internal circuitry remains active. To remove all power from the system, it is necessary to disconnect the power cord from the device. In systems with multiple power supplies, disconnect all the power cords to remove power from the system. NOTE: After setting the Power On/Standby switch to Standby, it may take the operating system up to 30 seconds before shutting down the power. 5. Disconnect all power cords after the system shuts down. 6. Disconnect any other external equipment connected to the computer. 2-6 Compaq StorageWorks NAS Executor E7000 Hardware Reference Guide COMPAQ CONFIDENTIAL Writer: Darrell Washington File Name: c-ch2 Hardware Options.doc Codename: Eusebio Part Number: 260615-001 Last Saved On: 10/19/01 3:02 PM
