Features
Enterprise Backup Solution Backup Software Features
The Compaq StorageWorksTM Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS) is an integration of
backup and restore application software with industry-standard hardware for a
complete enterprise class solution. Compaq has joined with leading software
companies to provide software solutions that support the backup and restore processes
of homogeneous and heterogeneous operating systems.
EBS software partners' backup solutions incorporate database protection, storage
management agents, and options for highly specialized networking environments.
Storage management software focuses on data backup and restore using an automated
digital linear tape (DLT), super digital linear tape (SDLT), or advanced intelligent tape
(AIT) library and Fibre Channel technology. The EBS combines the functionality and
management of EBS Storage Area Network (SAN), high-availability software, and
scaling tools to integrate tape and disk storage subsystems in the same SAN
environment. Depending on the specific software solution you are using, the EBS with
a backup software solution can include:
Compaq ProLiantTM servers running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000,

or Novell Netware
Compaq ProLiant servers running RedHat Linux and SuSE Linux
Compaq AlphaServerTM servers running Compaq Tru64 UNIX

NOTE: Compaq has provided a compatibility matrix as an aid to matching EBS components.
You can access the compatibility matrix at:
www.compaq.com/products/storageworks/ebs/EBScompatmatrix.html
NOTE: To determine the specific features of the backup software selection you are interested
in, visit the software vendor's website for details.
Servers in an EBS solution can share one or more Compaq StorageWorks DLT, SDLT,
and/or AIT libraries interconnected through Compaq StorageWorks Fibre Channel
SAN Switches.
Online storage, such as the Compaq StorageWorks Enterprise Modular Array (EMA),
Enterprise Storage Array (ESA), Modular Array (MA), and RAID Array (RA) can
also be connected with Fibre Channel SAN switches.
Solution Components
The following components make up the EBS:
Servers containing Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters
SAN Switch, Fibre Channel Storage Switch, Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop
(FC-AL) Switch, or Fibre Channel Hub
Modular Data Router or Fibre Channel Tape Controller-II
Fibre Channel to SCSI Bridge
Tape Library
Enterprise data backup and restore can be accomplished with different tape devices in
various configurations, using a variety of transport methods such as the corporate
communication network, a server SCSI bus, or a Fibre Channel infrastructure. EBS
uses a storage area network (SAN) that provides dedicated bandwidth independent of
the local area network (LAN). This independence allows single or multiple backup or
restore jobs to run without the network traffic caused by data protection environments.
Depending on the backup software solution, submitted jobs are run locally on the
backup solution server to which the job was submitted. Data, however, is sent over the
SAN to the tape library rather than over the LAN. This achieves greater speed and
reduces network traffic. Jobs and devices can be managed and viewed from either the

primary or any server or client connected within the EBS which has the supported
backup software solution installed. All servers within the EBS server group can
display the same devices.
NOTE: The features listed in this document are a composite of features for all EBS software
solution partners. You should research the specific functionality of the backup software solution
you are interested in.

Tape Libraries
A core advantage of Compaq StorageWorks Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS) with
backup solution software is the centralization of tape libraries and tape devices. Tape
libraries automate the tape handling process, freeing valuable administrative
resources. Implementing enterprise-class libraries within the EBS provides these
critical solution features: high availability, proven reliability, and manageability.
Automated tape libraries provide dedicated service (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).
EBS supports a number of tape libraries to provide data protection for enterprise data
center environments.

StorageWorks TL891 MiniLibrary System User Guide to install and configure the tape library.
The TL891 DLX or TL891 DLT Expansion Unit drives all of the robotics mechanism
controllers, eliminating the need to drive each controller separately. For the TL891
DLX or TL891 DLT Expansion Unit to drive each robotics mechanism, each device in
the stack is attached through a Robotics Mechanism Interface Cable (RMIC). For
more information about RMIC, see the "RMIC Cables" section later in this chapter.
To enable the unit to work within a stack environment, the configuration of each
TL891 DLX or TL891 DLT MiniLibrary must be reset to a slave setting. Follow these
steps to configure the unit:
All libraries (TL891 DLX and TL891 DLT Expansion Unit and TL891 DLX and
TL891 DLT MiniLibraries) must be in working condition.
Each TL891 DLX or TL891 DLT MiniLibrary used in the stack must be reset
from the default stand-alone master setting to a slave setting. To make this change,
use the front panel of the first TL891 DLX or TL891 DLT MiniLibrary to do the
following:
1. Press the Enter button on the TL891 DLX or TL891 DLT MiniLibrary.
2. Select the Configure Menu option.
3. Select the Set Special Config option.
4. Select the Alternate Config option.
5. Press the Enter button.

Connecting a TL891 DLX or TL891 DLT Expansion Unit or Data Unit
IMPORTANT: The TL891 DLT Expansion Unit must always be the top unit in the stack of data
units and TL891 DLT MiniLibraries. This enables the pass-through robotic mechanism to access
and control all devices in the stack.
The Expansion Unit or Data Unit SCSI cabling can have several different
configurations depending on the specific needs of each particular system. The SCSI
cable connection to the TL891 DLT Expansion Unit should be daisy-chained to the
next available TL891 DLT MiniLibrary.
SCSI Cabling
The SCSI cabling can have several different configurations depending on the specific
needs of each particular system. However, for your system to function properly, follow
these cabling rules:
The expansion unit must be the top device in the stack.
The SCSI cable connection to the TL891 DLT Expansion Unit should be
daisy-chained to the next available TL891 DLT MiniLibrary.
A TL891 DLT must be the last device, at the bottom of the stack.
Data units, libraries with only storage capacity, and additional libraries can be
installed in any order below the expansion unit as long as one TL891 DLT is at the
bottom.
The TL891 DLT MiniLibrary must be terminated at the fourth port in a one-drive
library and the sixth port in a two-drive library. Refer to the arrows in Figure 2-2.
The TL891 DLT MiniLibrary must be connected with a loop back cable at the
fourth and fifth ports in a two-drive library. The first two ports are used for the
robotics mechanism outside the stack environment.
NOTE: For additional information, refer to the Compaq StorageWorks DLT MiniLibrary
Expansion Unit User Guide.

RMIC Cables
For your system to function properly, follow these rules regarding the proper cabling
of Remote Management Interface Cables (RMIC):
A RMIC cable must connect the robotics mechanism motor to the TL891 DLT
Expansion Unit.
The RMIC cables must be connected from the expansion unit to each separate
device used in the stack.
The TL891 DLT Expansion Unit acts as the master and the other devices act as the
