Compaq DRTape v1.3
OVERVIEW
Compaq's DRTape Disaster Recovery Utility is a disaster recovery tool which replaces the traditional recovery methods associated with manual
downloads from floppy or CD-ROM. DRTape is a firmware driven software utility that provides a disaster recovery solution for Compaq ProLiant servers.
Embedded in the firmware of each supported tape device, DRTape uses Compaq tape drives to emulate bootable drive devices, similar to floppy and CD-
ROM drives. When implemented, DRTape can provide for the complete recovery of server software and data. The recovery process requires the use of
only one tape cartridge, in conjunction with the Compaq SmartStart CD, and can typically be completed in less than an hour.
DRTape v1.3 is the latest release of Compaq's tape-based disaster recovery tool, adding support for Compaq's 40/80-GB DLT tape drive as well as new
support for the Windows 2000 operating system on all DAT and AIT tape drives and the 20/40-GB DAT AutoLoader.
K E Y FEAT U R E S
DRTape is a complete disaster recovery tool, restoring your Compaq server's operating system, software applications, and data. Manual
downloads using multiple CD's or floppy disks to rebuild your server are no longer required.
DRTape disaster recovery utility is embedded in your tape drive firmware and supported ISV software application. Using SmartStart to
initialize your server, no other drive media are required other than your designated bootable DRTape tape cartridge.
Completely restores all software and data from one bootable tape cartridge. This provides a simpler, lower cost solution for managing your
disaster recovery strategy.
Depending on the size of your data set, DRTape can typically restore your system software and data in less than an hour. By reducing your
restore window by more than 50%, DRTape can significantly reduce the costs associated with downtime and lost data.
Supported by a wide variety of Compaq tape devices, ProLiant servers, and SCSI host bus adapters. Compaq customers can implement
DRTape with the industry's leading server and data protection products.
Qualified behind VERITAS Backup Exec and CA ARCserve 2000. Rigorous testing and qualification on the industry's leading backup
applications ensures compatibility with your Compaq tape devices.

Further information regarding supported hardware and software platforms, as well as required firmware releases, can be found in the "Compaq DRTape
Compatibilty Matrix" located on the Compaq.com website.
Disaster Recovery Preparation
Using DRTape reduces the preparation process for disaster recovery to only two steps:
Using both the ISV software and the Windows NT/2000 CD, a bootable image of the target server is created.
Using the appropriate tape media, a complete backup of the server's software and data is created. This cartridge, referred to as the DRTape backup
cartridge, will be used to restore the system in the event that a disaster occurs.
