The chapters are written in a logical sequence to expedite first-time installation. An overview of the chapters follows. The ProLiant DL360 server contains unique features and options, as well as software to enhance configuration and operation. To appreciate the server's capabilities, see Chapter 1, "Server Features." Before installing your server, install the hardware options you purchased with your ProLiant DL360 server. See Chapter 2, "Installing Hardware Options." Ensure that your rack site complies with required conditions before preparing and installing your server into a Compaq rack. See Chapter 3, "Installing the ProLiant DL360 Server." Now that your server is installed and operating, learn more about the following items: I Integrated Smart Array Controller a standard array controller that supports fault tolerance for internal mass storage. See Chapter 4, "Integrated Smart Array Controller." I Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition an optional expansion board that supports remote access to the server. See Chapter 5, "Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition." In Chapter 6, "Cabling Guidelines," you can identify all of the standard cabling configurations and learn about optional internal and external cabling configurations for the ProLiant DL360. The SmartStart utility can assist you by installing drivers for hardware and operating systems. See Chapter 7, "Server Configuration and Utilities." Compaq's standard management software includes the Integrated Management Log (IML) that records diagnostic information. Review the capabilities and functions of this software feature in Chapter 8, "Integrated Management Log." To prevent hardware damage and loss of data, the ProLiant DL360 server is designed to operate only when all components are functioning properly. The server generates event messages and/or suspends operation if a component becomes degraded from wear or becomes unseated from its connection. Chapter 9, "Troubleshooting," helps you determine the source of the error and suggests steps to remedy the situation. The appendices at the end of this guide provide supplementary and reference information, such as regulatory notices, guidelines for preventing electrostatic damage to components, explanations of LED indicators, battery replacement, and switch settings for the ProLiant DL360 server. This chapter briefly explains the following features: I Default Configuration I Compaq SmartStart I Server Management I Disk Management/Fault Tolerance I Compaq Insight Manager I Compaq System Configuration Utility I Automatic Server Recovery-2 (ASR-2) I Compaq Integrated Remote Console I Compaq Integrated Management Log I Server Health Logs I Unit Identification Switches I Status LED Indicators I Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition option Default Configuration When the server is first started, the system ROM detects the unconfigured state of the hardware and provides default configuration settings for most devices. By providing this initialization, the system can run diagnostics and other software applications before running the normal SmartStart and system configuration programs. NOTE: If you format and partition your boot drive before running SmartStart and the system configuration programs, you will not be able to create a system partition or use the management features that it provides. As part of the default configuration process, you are prompted for your intended operating system. On subsequent restarts, you may change your operating system selection as needed. Compaq SmartStart SmartStart, which is located on the SmartStart and Support Software CD, is the recommended way to configure your Compaq server with operating system software. SmartStart helps you achieve a well-integrated server that ensures maximum manageability and dependability. For additional information about configuration, see Chapter 7, "Server Configuration and Utilities." Server Management Server Management features perform the following functions: I The Server Parameter Tracking Utility uses a combination of hardware, firmware, and industry-standard management software to provide timely server-environment and subsystem information. This information includes fault tolerance, performance, and configuration status. I The Server Fault Tolerance feature supports several fault-tolerance options for internal disk subsystems and memory system error correction. I The Rapid Recovery Services provide fast identification and resolution of complex faults. This integrated server management includes Server Health Logs, Automatic Server Recovery-2 (ASR-2), and Compaq Integrated Remote Console (IRC). I The Integrated Management Log (IML) provides a detailed log of key system events. This log is accessible by utilities, including Compaq Insight Manager and the Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition option. The SCSI Managed Array Technology (Smart) controller can provide data fault tolerance on internal drives at the following RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) levels: I RAID 0 drive striping I RAID 1 drive mirroring Compaq Insight Manager Compaq Insight Manager is installed from the Compaq Management CD and is an easy-to-use, intuitive software utility designed for collecting server information. Compaq Insight Manager is used for the following functions: I Sending fault-condition alerts to a predetermined destination I Monitoring fault conditions and server performance I Controlling server security and configuration I Controlling servers remotely I Initiating rapid recovery services With Compaq servers, every hardware subsystem--including disk storage, system memory, and system processor--has a robust set of management capabilities. Compaq Full-Spectrum Fault Management prevents faults before they happen, keeps the system running in the unlikely event of a failure, and delivers rapid server recovery to normal operation after a fault. See Chapter 7, "Server Configuration and Utilities," for more information. Compaq System Configuration Utility The Compaq System Configuration Utility performs a wide range of configuration activities including the following: I Configuring PCI boards automatically I Providing switch and jumper settings I Resolving resource conflicts in areas such as memory, processor upgrades, and mass storage devices such as hard drives, tape drives, and diskette drives I Setting and storing power-on features such as date and time Compaq Confidential Need to Know Required Writer: RWeaver Project: Compaq ProLiant DL360 Setup and Installation Guide Comments: Part Number: 169545-002 File Name: b-ch01 Server Features.doc Last Saved On: 6/12/00 6:03 PM Server Features 1-17 I Storing the operating system's configuration information I Assisting in the installation of the operating system I Assisting in running diagnostic tools such as the TEST and INSPECT utilities The first time the server is configured, the SmartStart program automatically creates a system partition and installs the System Configuration Utility. For more information, refer to the SmartStart documentation and the Documentation CD shipped with your server. Automatic Server Recovery-2 (ASR-2) Automatic Server Recovery-2 (ASR-2) enables the server to boot automatically from either the operating system or the Compaq Utilities. If there is a critical system failure, ASR-2 automatically restarts the server and pages a designated system administrator. For additional information on the ASR-2 feature, refer to the Documentation CD that shipped with your server. Compaq Integrated Remote Console The standard Compaq Integrated Remote Console (IRC) performs a wide range of configuration activities. The console has the following features: I Is accessible with an ANSI terminal I Operates independently of the operating system I Provides support for remote server reboot I Provides access to system configuration I Uses out-of-band communication with dedicated external management modem For information concerning the standard Integrated Remote Console, refer to the Integrated Remote Console Guide included on the Documentation CD. Each ProLiant DL360 server has two unit identification switches, one on the front of the server and one on the back of the server. When activated from the front of the server, the Front Unit Identification switch illuminates two LEDs. An LED on the front of the server indicates that the switch is activated. An LED on the rear of the server, in the center of the Rear Unit Identification LED switch, provides a visual reference for service personnel. When moving between the front and rear of a rack filled with ProLiant DL360 servers, you can use the unit identification switches to quickly identify one or more ProLiant DL360 servers that require service or maintenance. Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition (Optional) The Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition option is a PCI-based, single-board computer that is installed to provide remote management of a server, regardless of the state of the host server operating system or the host CPU. A built-in Intel i960 processor allows the Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition module to work independent of the host server operating system. This module provides remote access and video, sends alerts, and performs other functions, even if the host server operating system is not responding. For installation and features information, see Chapter 5, "Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition (Optional)."
