This chapter also identifies the components that make up the cluster configuration. Overview of Compaq ProLiant Clusters for UnixWare 7 A cluster is a collection of servers and storage hardware and operating system and management software, allowing independent servers and storage to act as a single system. The cluster presents a single-system image to clients; provides protection against hardware, operating system, middleware, and application failures; and provides configuration options for load balancing. Clustering is an established technology that provides benefits such as: I Availability I Scalability I Manageability I Investment protection I Operational efficiency Compaq Confidential Need to Know Required Writer: Hilary Stead Project: Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 U/CL380 Quick Install Guide Comments: Part Number: 189020-001 File Name: b-ch1 Architecture of Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7.doc Last Saved On: 7/27/00 1:09 PM 1-2 Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 U/CL380 Quick Install Guide TM The reliability of the SCO UnixWare 7 NonStop Clusters technology protects applications and data from multiple error conditions. For more details on Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7, see the Compaq High Availability website at http://www.compaq.com/highavailability Cluster Configuration The Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 U/CL380 Quick Install cluster configuration requires various hardware and software components. Hardware components include: I One Compaq ProLiant CL380 I At least one internal 9.1-GB or greater hard drive per server node I One Cluster Integrity (CI) serial cable (provided in the cluster kit) I At least two 9.1-GB or greater hard drives installed in the shared storage area Software components include: I SCO UnixWare 7.1.1 Media Kit (provided in the cluster kit) TM I SCO UnixWare 7 NonStop Clusters 7.1.1+IP Media Kit (provided in the cluster kit) I Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 Quick Install CDs (provided in the cluster kit) TM I Compaq SmartStart and Support Software CD (provided with the Compaq ProLiant CL380) I Compaq Management CD (provided with the Compaq ProLiant CL380) TM NOTE: SCO UnixWare 7 and UnixWare 7 NonStop Clusters software licenses must be purchased separately through a SCO reseller or distributor. Compaq ProLiant CL380 The Compaq ProLiant CL380 consists of two Compaq server nodes and shared storage prepackaged in a cabinet. The ProLiant CL380 contains the latest Intel Pentium III processors and more than 200 GB of internal storage. It TM integrates with standard Compaq software, such as Compaq Insight Manager and SmartStart for ease of installation and monitoring. Standard features include: I One processor and integrated 512-KB level 2 cache and one Processor Power Module per server node I 128 MB of memory per server node I One 32-bit and three 64-bit expansion slots per server node I Disk controllers One Shared Storage RAID Controller CR3500 in the shared storage area One Dual-Channel Wide Ultra2 SCSI adapter in each server node Compaq Confidential Need to Know Required Writer: Hilary Stead Project: Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 U/CL380 Quick Install Guide Comments: Part Number: 189020-001 File Name: b-ch1 Architecture of Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7.doc Last Saved On: 7/27/00 1:09 PM 1-4 Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 U/CL380 Quick Install Guide I One Compaq NC3163 embedded Fast Ethernet WOL on the PCI local bus, and one Compaq NC3123 Fast Ethernet NIC PCI 10/100 WOL controller in each server node I Mass storage System shared storage drive cage area supports up to six 1-inch Wide Ultra2 SCSI drives. Each server node supports up to six drives. See the documentation that came with the Compaq ProLiant CL380 for more information and a complete list of features. Cluster Integrity Serial Cable The CI serial cable is required to prevent a split-brain condition. Split-brain occurs when both nodes in a two-node cluster try to operate as the root node. Since the active root node mounts the root file system and runs several critical cluster-wide functions, having two nodes trying to behave as the root node is undesirable. NOTE: The CI serial cable may be referred to as the split-brain avoidance (SBA) serial cable in UnixWare software and documentation. This NIC enables the cluster interconnect, which is precabled in the ProLiant CL380. NOTE: The cluster interconnect may be referred to as the cluster heartbeat cable in ProLiant CL380 documentation. The cluster nodes use the cluster interconnect to support the single-system image capabilities of the cluster, including: I Cluster-wide file system I Cluster-wide process management, migration, and load balancing I Cluster-wide networking and Cluster Virtual IP (CVIP) I Cluster-wide system administration and management Refer to the documentation that came with the Compaq ProLiant CL380 for more information on the cluster interconnect. Local Area Network Connection A Compaq NC3123 Fast Ethernet NIC PCI 10/100 WOL NIC comes preinstalled in slot 1 of each server node in the Compaq ProLiant CL380. These NICs enable the cluster to access a public local area network (LAN) and must be on a subnet different from the embedded Ethernet cluster interconnect. Multiple public LAN controllers can be installed after Quick Install is complete. For a list of certified NICs, see the Compaq High Availability website at http://www.compaq.com/highavailability Refer to the documentation that came with the Compaq ProLiant CL380 for more information on LAN connections. The nodes within the cluster appear to Compaq Insight Manager as separate UnixWare 7 systems. Compaq Insight Manager Overview Compaq Insight Manager is the Compaq console-based application for managing networked devices. Compaq Insight Manager provides intelligent monitoring and alerting capabilities for the critical systems in a distributed enterprise. Compaq Insight Manager consists of a console application and a set of server- or client-based management data collection agents. Key subsystems are designed to make system health, configuration, and performance data available to the agent software. The agents act upon data by initiating SNMP alarms in the event of faults and by providing updated management information. Compaq Insight Manager is located on the Compaq Management CD. Install Compaq Insight Manager on a Win32 desktop computer using the instructions provided on the CD. NOTE: Information on the Shared Storage RAID Controller CR3500 is only available through the web-enabled agents used with Compaq Insight Manager XE.
