Use the following guidelines when evaluating these tradeoffs. NOTE: The following guidelines are general. Use the Windows NT Power Supply Viewer Utility and option documentation to obtain the most accurate power capacity and assessment of power margin. Comparing processor and hard drive power: two processors draw as s much current as five to six hard drives. Comparing memory and 3.3V-powered PCI Expansion Board power: s each additional 512 MB draws approximately as much current as one to two PCI boards. Comparing hard drive and 5V-powered PCI Expansion Board Power: s one PCI card draws as much current as two to five hard drives. In general, PCI array controllers draw more current than PCI NICs. s For example, if the available capacity of the installed power supplies permits adding two processors, you can choose to add: two processors s one processor and three hard drives s up to six hard drives s Warranty Three-Year Parts, Labor, and On-Site Limited Warranty s Pre-failure warranty on processors, memory, and hard drives s For additional service and support offerings, visit the Compaq website at s www.compaq.com. The following instructions are provided as only an overview for the first-time installation of the ProLiant 6000 Server. Compaq recommends that you read all of the documentation that came with the server for complete installation instructions. If you have any problems, contact your Authorized Compaq Reseller. Overview of Installing the Server The following installation sequence is only a guide for installing the ProLiant 6000 Server for the first time. Depending on the hardware options you are installing or the configuration requirements of your system, some of these steps may not be performed in the sequence listed. 1. Select a site and unpack the server, keyboard (if included), mouse (if included), and monitor (if included). Refer to the next sections, "Optimum Environment" and "Unpacking the Shipping Boxes" in this chapter. 2. Remove the power supply shipping bracket. Refer to the next sections, "Optimum Environment" and "Unpacking the Shipping Boxes" in this chapter. 3. Install any expansion boards or other options such as additional memory, hard drives, and external storage devices (optional). NOTE: Non-plug-and-play ISA boards are installed after the System Configuration Utility has been run. See Chapter 4, "Installing Hardware Options" for more details. You will need to run the System Configuration Utility after you install hardware options with the exception of additional memory and most PCI boards. Refer to the Server Setup and Management pack shipped with your server to run the System Configuration Utility. See Chapter 4, "Installing Hardware Options," to install many of the major options. Connect the cables: keyboard (if included), mouse, monitor, network, and power. See "Connecting the Power Cord(s) and Peripheral Devices" later in this chapter. 7. Turn on the server and insert the SmartStart and Support Software CD to configure the server. To load the CD, see Chapter 5, "Server Configuration." For the SmartStart and Support Software CD installation procedures, refer to the Server Setup and Management pack shipped with your server. 8. Install the Compaq Insight Manager to manage the server. For the Compaq Management CD installation procedures, refer to the Server Setup and Management pack that shipped with your server. 9. Register the server. For server registration information, refer to the Server Setup and Management pack shipped with your server. Optimum Environment When installing your ProLiant 6000, certain temperature standards and power requirements must be met. Space Requirements Before installing a tower model, make sure that the installation site you select has 3-inch (7.6cm) clearance at front and back of the server for proper ventilation. For use with Pentium II Xeon and Pentium III Xeon processor-based servers only Writer: Sam Ogden Project: Compaq ProLiant 6000 Setup and Installation Guide Comments: 312237-003 (February 1999) File Name: C-CH02.DOC Last Saved On: 2/4/99 1:18 PM COMPAQ CONFIDENTIAL - NEED TO KNOW REQUIRED 2-3 Before installing a rack model, consider the following items: Clearance in the front of the rack should be a minimum of 25 inches for s servicing. Clearance in the back of the rack should be a minimum of 30 inches to s allow for servicing and for adequate airflow. Power Requirements WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, fire, or damage to the equipment, do not overload the AC supply branch circuit that provides power to the server. Consult the electrical authority having jurisdiction over your facility wiring and installation requirements. IMPORTANT: Because of the 100 to 120 VAC electrical rating of each power supply, some local electrical authorities may require either one 15-Ampere circuit for each power supply or one 20-Ampere circuit for each pair of power supplies. The power load needs to be balanced between available AC supply s branch circuits. The overall system AC current load must not exceed 80 percent of the s branch circuit AC current rating. If power strips are used, the load should not exceed 80 percent of the s power strip's marked electrical current rating. The installation of this equipment shall be in accordance with Local/Regional electrical regulations governing the installation of Information Technology Equipment by licensed electricians. This equipment is designed to operate in installations covered by the National Electric Code (ANSI/NFPA 70, 1993) and
