Introduction
Compaq ProLiant 7000
IMPORTANT: This manual is for Pentium II Xeon and Pentium III Xeon
processor-based servers only.
The Compaq ProLiant 7000 is a standards-based server that delivers the most
scaleable performance and the highest availability for business-critical
environments.
The Compaq ProLiant 7000 is a Pentium II Xeon and Pentium III Xeon
processor-based server offering one to four Pentium II Xeon or Pentium III
Xeon processors with a planned upgrade to 8-way Pentium II Xeon or Pentium
III Xeon processor technology. Combined with the latest high-availability
features, including PCI Hot Plug, the ProLiant 7000 offers investment
protection for your most demanding applications.

1-2 Introduction
Features
The following features are available on Compaq ProLiant 7000 models:
Processor and Redundant
Processor Power Modules
n Supports up to four processors and four Redundant Processor Power
Modules
o Evaporator plate and water-cooled heat pipes attached to the
processor
o One Redundant Processor Power Module per processor
n Upgradeable to future 8-way processor configuration using Pentium II
Xeon or Pentium III Xeon processor technology
IMPORTANT: You cannot mix Pentium III Xeon processors in a server that
has Pentium II Xeon processors.
System Memory
n ECC (Error Checking and Correcting Memory) with single-bit error
correction and detection down to a single DIMM, and multi-bit error
detection down to the memory bank
n Expandable to 8 GB (32 x 256-MB DIMMs)
n Supports up to eight memory banks with each bank consisting of four
DIMMs. One bank is installed or removed at a time. Each DIMM of a
given bank must be the same size, type, and speed.
n Supports EDO- 60-ns or faster DIMMs
n Performance enhancement by configuring your memory to take advantage
of Address Bit Permuting

Expansion Slots
Ten I/O expansion slots and three 33-MHz PCI buses
n Five 64-bit PCI Hot Plug slots (PCI Bus 3)
n Four 32-bit PCI Hot Plug slots (PCI Buses 1 and 2)
n One ISA modem slot
IMPORTANT: Slot 1 of the I/O board is dedicated to ISA Modem support
and is not hot-plug capable. Only install an ISA Modem into Slot 1 of the I/O
board.
PCI Hot Plug
PCI Hot Plug provides the ability to remove and replace, upgrade, and add PCI
expansion boards without powering down the server. Any PCI board can be
placed in a PCI Hot Plug slot. PCI Hot Plug device drivers and OS support,
however, are required to enable PCI Hot Plug.
New with the ProLiant 7000, the PCI Hot Plug Button allows for PCI Hot Plug
access directly at each PCI slot. A PCI Hot Plug Button is located above each
PCI slot, providing PCI Hot Plug control directly at the server without the use
of the PCI Hot Plug utility software.
For more information about PCI Hot Plug, refer to the Systems Reference
Library CD included in the Reference Information pack.
Redundant Hot Plug Fans
ProLiant 7000 servers include redundant hot-plug system fans that provide
high-level thermal protection. A failed system fan generates a system alert and
triggers the secondary (or redundant) fan to take over automatically. Redundant
hot-plug system fans protect the various server components from overheating
and possible system interruption.

1-4 Introduction
Internal Hot Plug Drive Bays
n Supports three hard-drive cages that can be configured with six 1-inch
hot-plug hard drives, four 1.6-inch hot-plug hard drives, or a
combination of both 1-inch and 1.6-inch drives. Drives may be of any
approved storage capacity, but must be mounted on Compaq hot-plug
drive trays.
n Supports up to three hard-drive cages with each cage capable of
supporting a maximum of six 1-inch hot-plug drives (totaling eighteen
drives with all three drive cages installed) or four 1.6-inch hot-plug
drives (totaling twelve drives with all three drive cages installed).
For a list of supported drive storage capacities, see the ProLiant 7000
information on the Compaq website, www.compaq.com.
Internal Removable Media Drive Bays
Supports six non-hot-plug removable media drive bays:
n One third-height drive bay occupied by 1.44-MB diskette drive
n One half-height drive bay occupied by an IDE CD-ROM drive
n Four half-height 5.25-inch drive bays
Disk Controllers
Supported disk controllers include:
n Smart Array 3100ES Controllers provide high performance and RAID
fault-tolerance. The Smart Array 3100ES Controller is cable-less and
provides three Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 buses for use with internal hot-plug
drive cages. SCSI cables are pre-installed between Wide-Ultra SCSI-3
connectors on the I/O board and each internal hot-plug hard-drive cage.
n One Dual Integrated Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 controller provides two Wide-
Ultra SCSI-3 connectors for use with internal removable media drive
bays and internal hard-drive cages.
n One Integrated Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 controller provides one Wide-Ultra

System Power Management:
Guidelines
Unless operating with two 750W power supplies (three for N+1 redundancy) at
220V, it may be necessary to make tradeoffs with respect to which options can
be added and powered with the installed power supplies. Use the following
guidelines when evaluating these tradeoffs.

1-8 Introduction
NOTE: The following guidelines are general. Use the Windows NT Power
Supply Viewer Utility and option documentation to obtain the most accurate
power capacity and assessment of power margin.
n Comparing processor and hard drive power: two processors draw as
much current as five to six hard drives.
n Comparing memory and 3.3V-powered PCI Expansion Board power:
each additional 512 MB draws approximately as much current as one to
two PCI boards.
n Comparing hard drive and 5V-powered PCI Expansion Board Power:
one PCI card draws as much current as two to five hard drives.
n In general, PCI array controllers draw more current than PCI NICs.
For example, if the available capacity of the installed power supplies permits
adding two processors, you have the option of adding:
n two processors, or
n one processor and three hard drives, or
n up to six hard drives
Warranty
n Three-Year Parts, Labor, and On-Site Limited Warranty
n Pre-failure warranty on processors, memory, and hard drives

Chapter 2
Server Installation
IMPORTANT: This manual is for Pentium II Xeon and Pentium III Xeon
processor-based servers only.
This chapter provides the procedures required to prepare a ProLiant 7000 server
to be mounted in a Compaq or industry-standard 19-inch rack or to be set up as
a tower model, and to complete installation.
Preparing the Server
Installing the server requires the following steps (detailed later in this chapter):
1. Select a site and unpack the server, keyboard (if included), and
mouse (if included). See the next sections, "Optimum Environment"
and "Unpacking the Shipping Boxes" in this chapter.
2. Remove the power supply shipping bracket. See the next section,
"Removing the Shipping Bracket" in this chapter.
3. Install any expansion boards or other options such as additional
memory, hard drives, and external storage devices (Optional).
You will need to run the System Configuration Utility after you install
some hardware options, with the exception of additional memory and
most PCI boards. Refer to the Server Setup and Management pack
shipped with your server to run the System Configuration Utility. See
Chapter 4, "Installing the Hardware Options," to install many of the
major options.
NOTE: Non-plug-and-play ISA boards are installed after the System
Configuration Utility has been run. See Chapter 4, "Installing Hardware
Options," for more details.
