About This Guide
This User Guide is designed to be used as step-by-step instructions for
installation, and as a reference for operation, troubleshooting, and future
upgrades.
General
This guide provides all the necessary information to install a Compaq
SMART-2DH Array Controller in a Compaq server. The SMART-2DH
Controller supports internal and external SCSI drives on the Compaq
Professional Workstations, the ProLiant and Rack-Mountable ProLiant family
of servers, and the Compaq ProSignia family of servers, specifically:
Professional Workstations 5000, 5100, 6000, and 8000
s
ProLiant 800 ,1200, 1500, 1600, 2500, 3000, 5500, 6000, 6500, 7000
s
ProLiant 850R, 1500R, 1600R, 2500R, 6000R, 6500R, 7000R
s
ProSignia 200, 200 6/233, 300, and 500
s
The information is modularized so that each chapter covers only one well-
defined installation task. You can choose a distinct path through this book to
cover only your particular installation. It also allows you to easily find any
portion of the information that you may require for future maintenance.
Experienced users may want to refer first to the Quick Installation poster
supplied with the SMART-2DH Controller option kit. The poster provides an
overview of all the necessary installation steps with references to detailed
information in this guide. The Quick Installation poster may contain all of the
information that you require if you are already familiar with these procedures.
NOTE: If you are installing the SMART-2DH Array Controller but will not be the end-user,
please pass this guide on to the person who will be responsible for the server when you have
completed the controller installation.
This Installation Guide, in electronic form, is also available in several
languages on the Compaq SmartStart and Systems Reference Library CD.
This CD is furnished with new Compaq servers or may be obtained from your
Local Compaq Reseller.

Cabling Illustrations in this Guide
Some of the figures in the hardware installation chapters illustrating SCSI
cabling inside the servers have been intentionally distorted. This is done to
show important features inside the servers that cannot be depicted in standard
isometric views. These illustrations are designed to show the relationship
between the various components and the general routing of cables.

xiv About This Guide
Any surface or area of the equipment marked with these
symbols indicates the presence of a hot surface or hot
component. If this surface is contacted, the potential for injury
exists.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of injury from a hot component,
allow the surface to cool before touching.

indicate the equipment is supplied by multiple sources of
power.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of injury from electrical
shock, remove all power cords to completely disconnect
power from the system.
Safety Interlocks
WARNING: Compaq ProLiant 1500/1500R, 3000/3000R, 5000/5000R,
! 5500, 6000/6000R, 6500/6500R, and 7000/7000R Servers: These
Compaq ProLiant models are capable of producing energy levels that are
considered hazardous. To reduce the risk of personal injury: Do not
attempt to defeat the safety interlocks that prevent access to hazardous
energy. Do not install or repair accessories and options inside interlocked
areas of the system. Installation and repair should be performed only by
individuals who are qualified in servicing computer equipment and
trained in the hazards associated with products containing hazardous
energy levels.
CAUTION: To prevent loss of data or damage to the equipment, place the
system in STANDBY before removing the top access panel, side access
panels, or removable media interlock bar (6000/6000R and 7000/7000R

Rack Stability
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the
! equipment, be sure that the leveling jacks extend to the floor and that the
full weight of the rack rests on the leveling jacks. The stabilizing feet are
attached to the rack if it is a single rack installation. The racks are coupled
together in multiple rack installations. A rack may become unstable if more
than one component is extended for any reason. Extend only one
component at a time.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to
! equipment, heed all warnings and cautions throughout the installation
instructions. Because the rack allows you to stack computer components
on a vertical rather than a horizontal plane, you must take precautions to
provide for rack stability and safety.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, always ensure that the
! rack is adequately stabilized before extending a component outside the
rack. Extend only one component at a time. The rack may become
unstable if more than one component is extended for any reason.

bus with multiplexed address and data lines, and includes a parity signal. It
provides a high-speed (up to 132 Megabytes/sec) path between the system
board and the SMART-2DH Controller.
The SMART-2DH Controller is a PCI Bus Master device and conforms to
Rev. 2.1 of the PCI Local Bus Specification.

2-2 Preparing for the Installation
Drive Considerations
If you will be installing or replacing drives in your Compaq server, keep in
mind the following points:
Drives may be Fast-SCSI-2, Fast-Wide SCSI-2, Wide-Ultra SCSI, or a
s
mixture of the three in servers and storage systems supporting hot-pluggable
drives.
Drives should not contain termination. Compaq servers and internal
s
cabling provide the required termination of the SCSI bus.
Compaq hard drives supported by the SMART-2DH Controller include:
1.05-GB Fast-SCSI-2
2.1-GB Fast-SCSI-2
2.1-GB Fast-Wide SCSI-2
2.1-GB Wide-Ultra SCSI
4.3-GB Fast-SCSI-2
4.3-GB Fast-Wide SCSI-2
4.3-GB Wide-Ultra SCSI
9.1-GB Wide-Ultra SCSI
9.1-GB Fast-SCSI-2
18.2-GB Wide-Ultra SCSI
Drives should be the same capacity to provide the greatest storage space
s
efficiency when drives are grouped together into the same drive array.
Except on hot-plug drives in ProLiant servers and storage systems, you must
s
manually set the SCSI ID on each drive to a unique value in the range of 0 to
6 for each SCSI bus. Consult the documentation that came with the drive for
instructions on setting the SCSI ID.
Expanding the Capacity of an Array
Provided below is an overview of the procedures to expand the capacity of
an array.
1. Review. Refer to the Compaq SMART-2DH Array Controller
Reference Guide for information on how storage capacity may be
added to an existing SMART-2DH array.
Writer: Salvo Project: Compaq SMART-2DH Array Controller Installation Guide Comments: 295470-002/March 1998
File Name: C-CH02.DOC Last Saved On: 4/2/98 10:38 AM
COMPAQ CONFIDENTIAL - NEED TO KNOW REQUIRED
2-3
2. Back up data. Although data should not be lost during a normal
capacity expansion, it is a good idea to back up all data in the array
that you will be expanding. This backup may also be used to return to
the original configuration if necessary.
3. Add drives. If you are using a server or storage system that does not
support hot-pluggable drives, you will need to power down the server
or storage system to add new drives. If you are using a server or
storage system that does support hot-pluggable drives, do not power
down the system or take it off-line. Simply plug the new drives into
vacant bays.
4. Configure drive array. Refer to the Compaq SMART-2DH Array
Controller Reference Guide for instructions on using the Compaq Array
Configuration Utility to reconfigure your drive array to make use of the
added capacity. If your operating system supports it, you may run the
Array Configuration Utility online.
5. Restore data. If necessary restore the data you backed up in step 2.
Your system will automatically create logical drives and redistribute data in
the array as necessary to expand the array.
Changing the Fault Tolerance
Provided below is an overview of the procedures to change the fault tolerance.
1. Decide on a fault tolerance method. Refer to the Compaq
SMART-2DH Array Controller Reference Guide for determining the
fault tolerance method which best suits your needs.
2. Back up data. Changing the fault tolerance will destroy the data on
that logical drive. Therefore you must back up all data in the logical
drive that you will be changing.
3. Configure drive array. Proceed to the Compaq SMART-2DH Array
Controller Reference Guide for information on reconfiguring your
drive array with the new fault tolerance method.
4. Restore data. Copy the backed up data into the same logical drive.
Your system will automatically redistribute the data according to the
new fault tolerance.

Updating Firmware
The ROMs on all Compaq servers and most Compaq options must be updated
regularly. This is done by flashing the ROM using a special Compaq utility
called ROMPaq, which replaces the existing contents of the ROM with
another version stored in a disk file. This is a convenient way to distribute
new firmware to keep Compaq products updated with the latest capabilities.

2-8 Preparing for the Installation
There are two ROMPaq utilities:
Systems ROMPaq for updating the system ROM in all Compaq servers
supporting Flash ROM. Use Systems ROMPaq when
installing a new SMART-2DH Controller in a Compaq
server to be sure that the server can utilize all the
capabilities of the SMART-2DH Controller.
Options ROMPaq for updating the onboard ROM on all Compaq options that
support flashing. Use Options ROMPaq when new
versions of the SMART-2DH Controller firmware or SCSI
drive firmware become available to take advantage of
expanded capabilities.
IMPORTANT: Before you install the new SMART-2DH Controller in the
server, you must run Systems ROMPaq to update the system firmware. Use
the instructions below to create diskettes with the latest version of Systems
ROMPaq from the Compaq SmartStart and Support Software CD, which is
supplied with the SMART-2DH Controller.
ROMPaq Diskettes
The ROMPaq utilities must be run from diskette. The latest version of the
ROMPaq diskettes may be created from the Compaq SmartStart and Support
Software CD that was supplied in the SMART-2DH Controller Option Kit.
We recommend that you initially use this version of ROMPaq because it is the
latest one that supports your new SMART-2DH Controller.

2-10 Preparing for the Installation
Running Systems ROMPaq
Systems ROMPaq is used to update the firmware in Compaq servers. The
SMART-2DH Controller has enhanced drive array capabilities and many
existing servers may not be able to take advantage of these capabilities
without updated firmware. Since it is difficult to determine when the
firmware needs to be updated, Compaq recommends that you run the latest
Systems ROMPaq on all servers when installing a new SMART-2DH
Controller. If you purchased your server with the SMART-2DH Controller
already installed you do not need to run Systems ROMPaq at the time of
server installation.
CAUTION: If you are replacing an existing array controller, such
as the Compaq SMART Array Controller, with the SMART-2DH
Controller, the system may not boot after hardware installation.
This will be true if the old array controller was the primary
controller containing the boot disk.
To avoid this problem when replacing an existing array
controller with a SMART-2DH Controller you should run
Systems ROMPaq before you make the hardware installation.
This will ensure that the server will recognize the SMART-2DH
Controller and not hang up on boot.
