Hot-Pluggability
Hot-pluggability refers to the ability to remove and replace a component without
interfering with system operation. There are three hot-pluggable components in
the ProLiant Storage System Model UE:
Drives - Failed hot-pluggable drives in fault-tolerant configurations can
s
be replaced without interrupting system operation. The data on the failed
drive is restored automatically on the replacement drive.
Fan array - If one of the cooling fans in the storage system fails (status
s
indicator is amber), the entire fan array can be replaced without
interrupting system operation.
Power supply - In systems with the optional redundant power supply
s
installed, either power supply can be removed and replaced without
interrupting system operation.
See Chapter 4 for specific limitations when replacing hot-pluggable components.
NOTE: The operating system and the SCSI controller must also support the hot-pluggable
features. See Table 1-1.

1-10 Introduction to the Compaq ProLiant Storage System Model
SCSI ID Assignments
Each device on a SCSI bus must have a unique identification number in the range
of 0 to 5 or 8 to 13. The SCSI ID determines the device priority when attempting to
use the SCSI bus. The highest priority, SCSI ID 7, is reserved for the controller.
CAUTION: Server lockups could occur if a hard drive is installed
in a drive bay with a SCSI ID that is already used by another device
in the server and if both devices are on the same SCSI bus.
IMPORTANT: All SCSI hard drives on the same SCSI bus must be internal
(within the server) or in an external storage system, but not both. A
configuration with both internal and external SCSI hard drives requires more
than one SCSI bus.
SCSI IDs are assigned automatically in the storage system according to the drive
bay used for each drive. The SCSI ID for each bay is indicated on the front panel.

1-14 Introduction to the Compaq ProLiant Storage System Model
System Power
The system power in the ProLiant Storage System Model UE does not shut off
completely with the power switch. The two front panel power switch positions
are ON and STANDBY, rather than ON and OFF. The STANDBY position
removes power from most of the electronics and the drives, but portions of the
power supply and some internal circuitry remain active.
To remove all power from the system, disconnect the power cord from the
ProLiant Storage System Model UE. In systems with multiple power supplies,
disconnect all power cords.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of electrical shock or damage to
the equipment, disconnect power from the storage system by
unplugging all power cords from either the electrical outlet or the
storage system.
Redundant Power Supply Option
The Redundant Power Supply option is available for the ProLiant Storage System
Model UE through a local Compaq Reseller or Authorized Compaq Service Provider.
The ProLiant Storage System Model UE has a provision for adding a second
power supply that acts as a redundant supply when installed. This Redundant
Power Supply is identical to the primary supply, and when installed, shares the
electrical load equally. If either supply fails or is removed, the other takes over
the full load without interruption. Hot-pluggability permits replacing the failed
supply without bringing down the system.
You can install a Redundant Power Supply at any time by plugging it in to the
storage system. No tools are needed and there is no need to power down the
system. See Chapter 5, "Installing Options" for more information on installing
and using this option.

Cabling
Cabling requirements vary depending on the system configuration. See the
specific system configurations below for cabling instructions.
Rack-Mountable Configuration
To ensure that the cabling in the back of a rack system does not interfere with
system operation or maintenance, follow these suggestions for cable
management on those systems. See Figure 2-10.
This configuration allows the removal of either hot-pluggable power supply in
redundant power supply systems without disturbing system operation. With the
cables out of the way, status indicators are easily visible.
All cables, including SCSI and power, for each storage system should be
s
bundled along the plane of the top of the system. Use one or more cable
ties to hold the cables together securely at the back of the unit.
All cables should run through the cable channel on the left side of the rack.
s
Tie the cable bundle to the cable channel securely to relieve the stress on
s
the connectors at the back of the storage system.
