Chapter
Server Startup and Operation Errors
When your server does not start, follow these preliminary steps listed below. If
these steps do not correct the problem, continue to the next section where a
more detailed diagnostic procedure is outlined.
1. Verify that the computer and monitor are plugged into a working outlet.
2. Make sure your source power is working properly. Refer to the "Power
Source" section in Chapter 2 of the Compaq Servers Troubleshooting
Guide.
3. Make sure the power supplies are working properly. See the "Power
Supply LEDs" section in Chapter 2. Also refer to the "Power Source"
section in Chapter 2 of the Compaq Servers Troubleshooting Guide.
4. If the system does not complete the Power-On Self-Test (POST) or start
loading an operating system, refer to "General Loose Connections" in
Chapter 2 of the Compaq Servers Troubleshooting Guide.
5. If the server is power cycling, verify that the system is not rebooting due
to an Automatic Server Recovery-2 (ASR-2) reboot caused by another
problem. Refer to Chapter 6 in the Compaq Servers Troubleshooting
Guide for more information on this utility.
6. Continue with the following section to decide your next course of
action.

To disconnect a single node for servicing during cluster operations:
1. Fail over all applications from the node being serviced to the redundant
node. Refer to your system software documentation from the
manufacturer.
2. Shut down the operating system of the node being serviced according to
your operating system instructions.
3. Press the Power On/Standby button on the front of the server node, to
place the node in standby mode.
4. For the same node, press the associated service button on the shared
storage isolator board, found on the rear of the shared storage unit.
The service mode LED will turn on (amber).

5. Once the service mode LED is amber, disconnect the cable from the
shared storage isolator board to the associated server node at the server
end.
6. Disconnect all other cables attached to the associated server node, at the
server node end.
CAUTION: In a single CR3500 RAID controller configuration, pressing the
CR3500 RAID controller reset button causes any application being run from the
shared storage area to fail. In a dual CR3500 RAID controller configuration,
pressing the CR3500 RAID controller reset button fails over the associated
CR3500 RAID controller activity to the other controller.
CAUTION: When removing cables, be careful to remove only the cables for the
node being serviced. Removing a cable from the active node after the first node
has been powered down will cause the system to go down.
7. Perform the indicated service to the node.
8. Reconnect the cable.
9. Press the service button.
The service mode LED should turn off.
10. Power on the server node by pressing the Power On/Standby button on
the front of the unit.
11. Continue with normal cluster operations.

Switch Settings
When a component is added, removed or not working, the server switch
settings must be checked. In some cases the switch settings must be
reconfigured for the server to recognize these changes. If the system
configuration is incorrect, your server may not work properly and you may
receive error messages on the screen. Setting the system board switches is part
of the troubleshooting process.
The ProLiant CL1850 server node system boards use two DIP Switches: a
six-position processor switch (SW2), and a six-position maintenance switch
(SW1). The following tables show the positions, functions and settings for
both switches.

POST Error Messages
The Power-On Self-Test (POST) is a series of diagnostic tests that runs
automatically on Compaq computers when the system is turned on. POST
checks firmware and assemblies to ensure that the computer system is
functioning properly.
If Power-On Self-Test (POST) finds an error in the system, an error condition
is indicated by an audible and/or visual message. If an error code is displayed
on the screen during POST or after resetting the system, use the instructions in
the following table. The error messages and codes listed include all codes
generated by Compaq products. Your system generates only the codes that are
applicable to your configuration and options.
NOTE: Many of the actions listed require you to run Compaq Diagnostics or the Compaq
System Configuration Utility. Steps for running these utilities are provided in Chapter 4 of
the Compaq Servers Troubleshooting Guide.
